The English Oak (Quercus robur) supports more life forms than any other native trees. The Celts revered them as a symbol of truth, courage and wisdom. Oak was the primary shipbuilding material until the mid C19th and modern uses include architectural beams, flooring and wine barrels.

The Field Maple (Acer Campestre) is attractive to aphids and their predators including ladybirds. In Celtic mythology it is a symbol of strength, endurance and fertility. Traditionally, it was thought that Maple branches hung around a doorway could prevent bats from entering a building. Uses include wood-turning, carving and making musical instruments, particularly harps. The wood polishes well and is often used as a veneer.
